Aphorisms

‘coined’ by Donald Jeffries

On St. Louis’ view of itself:

I’ve finally figured out the three levels of St. Louis -

  1. It’s a mid-size city

  2. With a big city attitude

  3. And a small town mentality.

On New Mexico’s perennial economic situation:

My grandmother’s comment - When the Great Depression hit New Mexico in 1929, two things were different than what occurred back East: (1) Nobody jumped out of any windows, because all of the buildings were one-story, and (2) nobody noticed any difference, because there had always been a Depression in New Mexico!

My updated observation - When times are good, we’re all really happy; when times are bad, we go back to normal.

On sexuality:

Most people are actually bisexual - primarily they make love to themselves and, on occasion, to other people.

On the Unitarian Universalist fear of ‘spreading the good word’ about their faith:

When the CIA and FBI were having a problem with Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanson selling state secrets to the Soviets, they REALLY missed the boat; they should have hired a Unitarian, because they really know how to keep a secret!!

On work output in New Mexico state government:

Most of the employees have no problems, per se, with someone else working; the primary concern they have is that, when someone else works, it creates work for them and that is a problem! (They would much rather gossip or take coffee breaks.)

On male ‘sexual self-image’:

Men in American society would do themselves well to worry less about the size of their sexual organs and concentrate more about the warmth of the hearts; less about their masculinity and more about their humanness.
